Humility

I remember sitting in our Sunday school class at our church in Illinois for a lesson on community. I was struck by the idea that by not asking for help when we need it, we are robbing others of the opportunity to bless us and are impeding the building of a community. It sounds to simple and intuitive writing it out now, but at the time it rocked my views and challenged me to be less self reliant. Growing up in a very individualistic society, we learn to be independent and generally look down on those who ask for help (ie government handouts). Somehow, I don't think that's the kind of community Christ encouraged us to establish with each other. I think most of us are more than willing to (perhaps are even excited to) help others we know are in need. Asking for, and receiving, help always seems harder than giving it. It puts you in a vulnerable place, allowing others to see your weaknesses and depending on them rather than yourself. It is extremely humbling.

So, in an attempt to get past my desire to be strong and in control, I'm admitting that we could use some help. We've had a lot of unforeseen medical expenses in the last year but by carrying multiple insurance policies, we've been able to cover most things. There are, however, a few things that would really benefit Wesley that insurance either won't cover at all, or only covers a small part of. We'd love to send Wes to Adam's Camp for a week of intensive physical, speech, occupational, and music therapy. We'd also love for him to go to the STAR Center to help with his vast feeding issues. So to help pay for these things along with some adaptive equipment and insurance premiums, we're having a Pampered Chef fundraiser party. If you'd like to help you can order online (instructions below) anytime before March 15th and 15% of your order goes directly to us. If you want to help but aren't that into kitchen stuff, I also added a donate button on the top of his blog that goes directly to us to help Wesley.

Please know that I am completely humbled to ask for financial help and please don't feel obligated.
