And the results are...
Upon arriving at the hospital this morning (after getting up at 4:30am) we were told that they had canceled Wesley's procedures since they weren't able to get all 3 scheduled together and no one had called us to let us know. For that matter, we got a call on Thursday confirming his appointment and I talked to orthopedics on Friday about everything making sure to emphasize that it was important for us to get the endoscopy done as soon as possible. So after I calmed down from my frustration, they were able to reschedule the endoscopy (with Wesley's GI doctor) this morning and we will have to do the ABR when we do his hand surgery.
So the endoscopy showed irritation in his upper stomach. They took a bunch of biopsies to try and determine if the irritation is a cause, or just a result of all of his vomiting. Hopefully by Friday we'll have some answers.
Over Christmas we tried a blenderized diet for Wes which helps some kids with delayed gastric emptying as a complication of the nissen. He was still throwing up with the new diet and was completely exhausted after we fed him (like couldn't stay awake long enough to get the entire feeding through his g-tube). When we called GI and asked about it, they said it was "concerning" and told us to go back to formula feedings. Today his GI doctor talked said that he's concerned about Wes having dumping syndrome (another complication of the nissen) which causes the stomach to empty too fast and them to become hypoglycemic. There is a glucose test they can do for that so pending any big revelations from the biopsies, we will schedule that.
I'm starting to doubt there is one unified explanation for all of his feeding/vomiting/constipation issues. Maybe it's that the two most recent theories are complete opposites of each other or that nothing has consistently helped him, but this whole thing seems very complicated. Oh and we did confirm that he has a milk protein allergy (different from an intolerance which is very common in babies). We're set to go see the allergist in February...
I love that they have baby sized hospital gowns :)
