Inside Wesley's Brain

Along with all the written reports about Wesley's imaging, we also got a DVD with all of the pictures.  Here is a view of his brain from his MRI on December 27th.  The black part on the right is blood inside his brain (from his stroke).  On the left you can see his eye (pretty crazy looking huh).  Besides seeing the obviously bleeding in his brain, the doctors were also concerned about a few smaller spots of bleeding and some other parts that just "didn't look right." 


The neurologist told us that as the blood gets reabsorbed into his brain material over the course of several months, the brain material either scars and dies or heals.  They don't typically repeat MRIs for stroke patients because an updated image doesn't change any treatment or give an accurate prediction of their future capability.    The visual/scientific part of me really wants a new MRI so I can what progress he has made.  I want to know how much of his brain died and how much healed.  Even though they don't normally do repeat MRIs, the neurologist said she might want to do another one for Wesley because of other abnormalities that they saw on the first one.  They are having a pediatric neuroradiologist at Children's Hospital review his MRI and then they will decide what to do next.  They are supposed to call me in about another week to let me know.  I'm really hoping for a repeat MRI and will try and push for one if they are still on the fence whether or not it is necessary (I'm gradually learning to advocate for what we want rather than blindly accepting everything they tell us).

Please pray that they will decide to do another MRI and that it will show a lot of healing in the brain and that the other abnormalities are no longer present.

    Praying for another MRI so you will have a better idea of what is happening AND for healing in his little brain. He is so precious!

    You know Wesley better than anyone else. Stand up for what you think he needs. You need to be his #1 advocate. Also, do not hesitate to refuse something if you feel it is not right for him. The Bilbe promises you that God will continually guide you. Claim that promise and make decisions with that in mind. I am continuing to pray for all of you. Karen Hankins

In my quest for books to support me in this journey I've ended up on, I found a book called Same Lake, Different Boat . It is written for Christians (particularly church leadership) to help them learn to minister to people with disabilities and their families. Although I am not necessarily the intended audience for this book, it has more profoundly impacted me than all the books I've read and I'm only on chapter 4 (I read the first chapter 3 times it was so good). I desperately want to plagiarize the first chapter here because I know I won't summarize it as well as she wrote it. A Different Boat

I periodically get the bug to write a blog again.  As I thought about a couple different blog ideas, I meandered over and started reading old blogs I've written and came to two conclusions. 1) I have grown tremendously over the last 8 years.  Reading my own words about my hopes, fears, and experiences over Wesley's lifetime so far, I can recognize a ton of learning and maturing that has happened in that time.  I know a ton about systems I didn't know even existed 8 years ago.  But more than that, I have had to wrestle with so many big emotions and challenges that I'd been spared from for most of my life up to that point.  I cringe a little to read the naivety in some of my posts and I wonder how I will look back at the words I'm now writing in 10 years.  I guess I hope I will continue to grow so I will be able to see the immaturity I have now through more wise eyes.  And hopefully can read with grace and kindness towards the person I am today. ...

Wilder

I feel like a competent writer when I am trying to express my philosophical or theological ideas or talking about abstract or societal concepts.  When it comes to telling my story, I find it much harder to express the depth of an experience.  It seems like everything I write down, although internally filled with enormous emotional weight, comes out cold and clinical.  Nevertheless, over the last several months I have slowly been processing through the traumatic memories of Wilder's first weeks to begin to write down our experience.  Years from now, when more of the details have faded I'm hopeful I will be glad to have this record.  So forgive the disjointed, clinical explanation writing as this was as much about processing for me as about sharing the story.   Almost a year ago, I was 36 weeks pregnant with my 4th child when my 7 year old suddenly spiked at 103 degree fever.  Next came a sore throat and then a rash all over his torso.  So of...
